I'm not totally against hybrid fish, so long as the fish is not deformed and it's being labelled as such so that people will know it's origin. I'm also not against selective bred fish, so long as the fish is being selected for better colours and disease resistance. However, having a hybrid fish with a highly deformed 'balloon' body, and then dyed it with disco colour is really off the limit. I've spotted these 'Parrot' Fish (hybrid cichlid with highly deformed mouth that cannot be close, and a crooked spine) in a fish shop a few months back, and they were being dyed and 'tattooed' with multicolour. It sure looked cute to the unwary (just look their mouth that has been tattooed with a red 'lipstick'), but to me, that's cruelity to the extreme. I feel that it's my duty to inform all my readers about this, and hopefully will stop this trend if the demand of these fish has ceased. So I would like to stress again that these are hybrid fish, selective bred on the ugly side, and artifically mutilated. Think twice before you consider buying them.
A few weeks ago, I found even more 'tattooed' fish for sale in a nearby fish shop. The following looks like certain species of African mbuana.
And the following are 'rainbow' kois:
Well, I can foresee that there will be more of these 'tattooed' fish for sale very soon if people don't stop purchasing them.
